Take an old barn, pair it with Zehnder ventilation systems and turn it into a modern, energy efficient multifamily house. Center stage of the action is an small town in Switzerland where an old barn was replaced with an energy efficient multifamily house. For the permission of the new building the department of cultural heritage protection got involved to ensure that the building would maintain typical characteristics of a barn while retaining similar volume of living space.

Plain but modern shines the former barn with its spruce timbered outer wall. A Zehnder balanced ventilation system provides fresh air for the entire building including the integrated hair salon. Max Muster explains: “Zehnder was able to offer us a complete package especially considering the Minergie-P energy standard and the integrated hair salon. For us there wasn’t really an alternative option.”
Two Zehnder ComfoAir Q 350 provide fresh air in the condominium of the property owners and the rented apartment on the top floor.
The hair salon is equipped with a ComfoAir 70 a single room ventilation unit transporting 60m³ air per hour making it an oasis of wellbeing. The integrated enthalpy exchanger helps to ensure a high heat and humidity recovery optimizing the indoor air quality especially during the winter season.
Invisible, silent fresh and healthy air Draught-free, silent, and almost invisible the ventilation units are working hard in the basement of the premise.
Ceiling design cover grilles are the only visible evidence for a comfortable ventilation system providing fresh, healthy air. Through heat recovery technology it is possible to recover a high percentage of the energy used for the premises indoor climate that otherwise would waste.
The property owner decided to add a Zehnder Enthalpy Exchanger to the ventilation unit with integrated humidity recovery function. This technology prevents too dry indoor air in winter and too humid indoor air in summer. The patented polymer membrane transfers steam and warmth from the extract air to the supply air recovering 86% of warmth and 73% of humidity.
The Zehnder Enthalpy Exchanger recovers both the thermal and the latent energy from the stale air extracted from wet rooms around the home. This additional energy, which would otherwise have been lost, is transferred into the incoming fresh air stream before being supplied to habitable rooms.
Our ventilation solutions deliver the ideal indoor air quality, integrating a series of products to ensure the property is effectively ventilated.
